Bulk water prices
In 2008, the Queensland Government announced the outlook for bulk water prices for South East Queensland (SEQ), following analysis and recommendations by the Queensland Water Commission.
A 10-year price path was projected for bulk water prices based on assumed interest rates and consumption patterns. It reflects not only the cost of existing bulk water assets but also the cost associated with significantly improved water security for SEQ delivered by the $7 billion water grid, including desalination, purified recycled water, new storages and the regional pipeline network.
After taking into account inflation, all households in SEQ—except for those in the Sunshine Coast and Redland Council areas—that use the same amount of water have had the same increase in their bulk water charges in their annual water bill from July 2008.
Under the water price path, councils will reach the final price point at different times, reflecting the fact that councils have different bulk water costs at present. Once the final price point is reached, bulk water increases should be no more than the rate of inflation.
The years in which the relevant councils reach the final destination price point are:
- Lockyer: 2016-17
- Somerset: 2015-16
- Scenic Rim: 2016-17
- Logan: 2016-17
- Gold Coast: 2016-17
- Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast and Redlands: 2017-18.

Bulk water price path review
In December 2010, when all SEQ dams were close to full, the Queensland Government brought forward the review of the bulk water price path, passing on the benefits of the efficient operation of the Water Grid to residents.
