Efficient irrigation

Under Permanent Water Conservation Measures, gardens and lawns can be watered with an efficient hose, sprinkler, or irrigation system between 4 pm and 10 am, any day except Monday, when watering is not permitted.

Watering with a bucket or watering can may be done at any time.

The efficient irrigation guidelines below should also be followed:

Hose

Only use with a trigger or twist nozzle and in permitted times

Sprinklers

Use only:

  • if it emits less than 9 litres a minute
  • with a timer
  • for up to 30 minutes
  • within permitted times.
Irrigation systems (drippers, micro-sprayers, pop-up sprinklers, drip lines)

Use only:

  • if it emits less than 9 litres a minute
  • with a timer (electronic timers must be used with either a rain or moisture sensor).
  • within permitted times.

Use other equipment if approved by a certified irrigation professional.

Gardening tips:

The below tips will help residents to water their garden at home more efficiently:

  • Water only when the garden needs it—when plants are showing signs of stress or the soil is dry.
  • Water deeply to encourage root growth—frequent shallow watering causes plants to grow shallow roots, leaving them more vulnerable to drought and disease.
  • Mulch gardens to reduce evaporation.
  • Improve soil quality to enable it to retain moisture.
  • Avoid watering when it is windy.
  • Choose water efficient plants.
