Baseline assessment

The Water Act 2000 requires baseline assessments to be completed for water bores in areas where petroleum and gas production testing or production has commenced. The assessments are required to assist the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM), petroleum tenure holders and landholders with potential future make good arrangements.

DERM is responsible for regulating the baseline assessment process and has published a Baseline Assessment Guideline (PDF)* and related Outcome of Baseline Assessment Form (Word)‡.

The QWC’s function is to store baseline assessment information. Petroleum tenure holders must submit this information to the QWC in accordance with the guideline and approved form.

The QWC may use baseline assessment information as part of undertaking its CSG role, including for the preparation of underground water impact reports.

Information for petroleum tenure holders submitting baseline assessments

The QWC has prepared the following procedural documentation to support petroleum tenure holders in submitting baseline assessment information.

It is expected that many petroleum tenure holders will submit baseline assessment information to the QWC electronically in accordance with this process.
