Queensland Water Commission Securing our water together

Water supply emergency projects

Projects are underway to secure South East Queensland's water supply and are outlined in the Water Regulation 2002. The projects are a coordinated set of actions to be undertaken by a number of State and Local Government entities and include:

  • constructing the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme
  • constructing the Southern Regional Water Pipeline
  • constructing the Eastern Pipeline Inter-connector
  • constructing the Northern Pipeline Inter-connector
  • constructing the South East Queensland (Gold Coast) Desalination Facility
  • constructing Traveston Crossing Dam Stage 1
  • constructing Wyaralong Dam
  • upgrading Enoggera Water Treatment Plant
  • raising Hinze Dam Stage 3 and preparing for associated water harvesting works
  • developing underground water resources at Bribie Island and in the area around Brisbane
  • reducing the demand for water, or achieving or encouraging a more efficient use of water
  • ensuring service providers’ participation in pressure and leakage reduction programs and a domestic retrofit program
  • making use of other water efficiency outcomes aimed at greater use of recycled water for industrial and commercial customers and reduced water use by power stations
  • maximising the sustainable take of water from Leslie Harrison Dam, while  maintaining the existing sustainable take of groundwater from North Stradbroke Island
  • constructing Cedar Grove Weir
  • constructing Bromelton Off-stream Storage

Service providers give monthly progress reports on their projects to the QWC. To access the monthly reports, select from the links on the left.

The regional water security program sets out these actions, as well as key projects in the regional water supply strategy interim report. The program was introduced in November 2006 under section 1141 of the Water Act 2000. Key outcomes of the program include:

  • developing a System Operating Plan - July 2008 (PDF, 834kB) and
  • ensuring key actions and responsibilities are complied with.
