SEQ Water Strategy background
The Queensland Water Commission released the draft South East Queensland Water Strategy in March 2008. It sets out a new approach to regional water planning designed to meet the region’s water supply needs for the next 50 years. It will deliver a new standard of water security in Australia’s fastest growing region. The plan sets out a proactive approach to securing our future water supply – including implementing a range of demand management measures and planning for the building of new infrastructure.
Completed in August 2004, the SEQ Regional Water Supply Strategy Stage 1 report aimed to:
- Ensure that all local governments in the study area could meet their water supply needs to 2020;
- Identify the regional infrastructure that must be progressed in the short to medium term; and
- Assess rural water needs.
Published in November 2005, the Interim Report outlined:
- The approach needed to ensure water supplies meet our short and medium term water needs
- details of short term priority projects and contingency planning initiatives to be commenced in the period 2005-2009; and
- medium (2010-2020) and possible long term (2020-2050) initiatives.
The Strategy sought input from key interest groups through a series of workshops. Workshop contents and issues are summarised:
