Queensland Water Commission Securing our water together

Excessive water user program

Households using more than 1,000 litres a day are being alerted to their high volume water use and provided information on how to reduce their consumption.

Penalties, such as an outdoor watering ban, will apply for households using excessive amounts of water if they don’t reduce their consumption. Households with a legitimate reason for high water use will be exempt.

Excessive use means more than 1,000 litres per household per day or more than 250 litres per person per day if there are five or more residents.

The program includes the following steps:
  1. Home notified of their excessive use through their Council’s normal billing process
  2. Home notified again and asked to explain excessive use (homes with a legitimate reason for high water use will be excluded from the program)
  3. Penalty (outdoor watering ban) applied if home continues to use water excessively (1,000 litres a day or 250 litres per person if there are five or more residents).
