Efficient irrigation
Under Medium Level Restrictions, town water can be used for irrigating gardens, but not lawns.
For anyone wanting to irrigate gardens:
- observe watering times. There are now two half-hour periods for each household to hose each week
- use approved watering devices. These devices must use 9 litres of water or less per minute
- install a rain gauge, soil moisture senor or a rain sensor
- use a 30 minute capable timer within the allotted watering time on either:
- a non-fixed sprinkler
- a fixed sprinkler (including drippers, micro sprays, fixed sprayers and drip lines).
You should also:
- ensure soil is dry enough to warrant watering (so no need to water after rainfall)
- stop water from falling on buildings or hard surfaces
- don’t water in windy conditions
- mulch gardens to reduce evaporation
- calculate garden water needs
- don’t allow water to pond, pool or run off.
There is still a ban on watering lawns and hosing pathways and driveways and penalties still apply.
